Origins and Early Days:
In the bustling city of Birmingham in 1856, a legacy was born. Founded by Diedrich Leonardt, D. Leonardt & Co. quickly became renowned worldwide for its exceptional nibs. With over 3,000 employees, the company was at the heart of Birmingham’s booming pen trade, supplying nibs of all shapes and sizes.
Competition and Expansion:
As the pen trade flourished, so did competition. In 1870, Andrew Charles founded T. Hessin & Co., looking to capitalize on Birmingham’s success. Despite this, D. Leonardt & Co. continued to expand rapidly, gaining four more premises in Birmingham and merging with Hewitt & Co. The late 19th century saw D. Leonardt emerge as the fastest-growing manufacturer in the West Midlands, paving the way for international expansion.
Innovation and Prestige:
Following the footsteps of their father, Charles and Alvis Leonardt forged connections in South America and Europe, eventually becoming penmakers to the Kings of Italy, Spain, and Portugal. This era also saw the birth of the iconic 'Eureka Pen,' later known as the ball-point pen, through a collaboration with inventive genius Hezekiah Hewitt.
Surviving Hardship:
The World Wars brought unprecedented challenges, with all resources redirected to support the British Government’s war effort. However, the spirit of innovation persisted. In 1947, Arthur Charles, the grandson of Andrew Charles, established the Highley Pen Company in an old fire station in Highley, Shropshire. Two years later, Highley Pen Company merged with D. Leonardt & Co., combining their expertise in nibs, dip pens, and stationery.
A Legacy Continued:
As Britain emerged from the devastation of the Second World War, the pen industry underwent restructuring. In the 1980s, Manuscript Pen Company was formed, focusing on calligraphy products and school fountain pens under the holding group Highley Pens LTD.
A Modern Vision:
Today, Manuscript Pen Company stands as a testament to centuries of craftsmanship and innovation. Under the leadership of Charlie Stockbridge, the company continues to uphold the values instilled by its forefathers – quality, innovation, and creativity. As we celebrate over 150 years since the founding of D. Leonardt & Co., Manuscript Pen Company remains committed to delivering exceptional products that inspire creativity and expression in every hand that holds them.
