Hari & Deepti’s work is a Pandora box full of stories and imagination that they bring to life through their intricate paper cut light boxes and paper clay sculptures. They have always been drawn towards the imaginative aspect of story telling. Stories have so many shades and depth in them, and paper as a medium has the exact qualities to reflect and interpret them. They believe that “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”
Moka Satish Kumar
Paper sculptor Moka Satish Kumar is based in Vizhag; he creates intricate portraits and framed art works using paper sculpting techniques.“ However, it takes me a month on an average to complete such a work of art.” As you can guess, there’s a long line of people waiting to order a work of art with Satish. And it is no wonder. All you have to do is take a look at the first-of-its-kind portrait, and you couldn’t agree more.
Parth Kothekar
This unique and intricate ' paper art' will leave you speechless! Parth Kothekar has turned plain pieces of paper into unreal masterpieces. Although Partha’s paper cut designs are intricate, his ideas are simple that are based on everyday aspects of life. Even in this simplicity, there is a challenge since he really doesn’t know what the final output will be until the end. Challenges motivate him and curiosity keeps him going.
Divya Kothiyal
21-year-old Divya Kothiyal is changing the world of gifting by making exquisite quilled frames on her Insta Page ‘Dola Quilling’, which are handmade, beautiful, and personalised according to the purpose and occasion. Having created an Instagram buzz in a matter of weeks, she takes orders on her quilling page and, to no one’s surprise, gets booked for the whole month in no time! This means you have to book the art at least a month in advance. Pretty cool, right?
Niharika Rajput
This young artist is taking the avian world by storm, creating lifelike paper sculptures of various bird species. From minivets to hummingbirds to kingfishers, a simple scroll through her Instagram account will show you that Rajput can breathe life into any bird in this paper land. Rajput creates sculptures but what she builds is an intent to conserve and protect the avian residents of our planet.
Swapna Khade
Swapna Khade from Pune, who prefers to make art out of paper. Swapna does what is called as Paper Quilling, where strips of colored paper are rolled into various shapes and then stuck on paper. There are other artists who practice quilling but more often than not they limit themselves to floral designs and the like. Meanwhile Swapna adds her own twist to the art form by making quirky representations of everyday objects, and even combining it with typography to create colorful and inspiring messages on paper.
Samir Bharadwaj
Papernautic's Samir Bharadwaj is gradually assembling a community of crafts enthusiasts in Mumbai by holding intimate, offbeat paper-art workshops. Working his way through the desks, offering hacks and assistance is Samir Bharadwaj, an independent designer for over 20 years who now runs the paper art studio, Papernautic, in Mumbai. Through experimental workshops that travel across styles, he aims to make paper art accessible for the novice, and challenging for the enthusiast.
Sabeena Karnik
She is a graphic designer and illustrator from Mumbai, who specializes mainly in paper typography. That is to say, she creates type and letters by hand using only paper, which is the primary thing that sets her work apart from other typographers. She says that this “evokes many reactions from the viewer, especially because it is all handcrafted by me and nothing is done digitally”. One illustration can take around 7-10 days to finish, with each day generally lasting 12 hours. The process requires a lot of patience, precision and careful handling of the paper, since it is very delicate and easy to crush.
Aditi Anuj
Aditi Anuj is an origami artist who challenges the potential of paper. Her passion for paper-folding has led her to work on large scale installations with top brands. Aditi’s work mainly focuses on scale and compositions, in different mediums like leather, polypropylene, textile and paper. From miniature folding to large scale sculptures, her objective is to bring character as well as a visual focal point to the space, be it in the form of a lamp, an artwork or an installation.
Uurmi Bhatia
Uurmi creates a magical setting with an interesting mix of paper flowers, glass cloches, chai glasses used as tea-light holders, and some accent pieces. She creates drama by aesthetically grouping together different elements in varying heights, colours and textures, thus lending a dynamic touch to the tablescape. She founded Mi ikigai, an artisanal paper flower studio in 2017. She learnt the craft from her mother who was a hobby teacher, and with Mi ikigai she endeavors to bring back the joy of crafting into our digitized lives.
Bharati Pitre
Bharati Pitre is a mixed media artist who currently works in paper pulp. She studied at Sophia Polytechnic in Mumbai with a specialization in illustration. Bharati’s work ranges from purely serious art to experimental and commissioned work, which is part of various private collections in India and abroad. Artist Bharati Pitre’s papier mâché sculptures are based on her observations of day-to-day urban life, be it the obsession with selfies, or the city’s vanishing chawls.
